Just being a Ralph

Ralph has been living the life of a three-year-old the past couple of months. He just tries to make it through each day with as many strange words as he can imagine while pushing the limits to see how far he can go without getting a timeout.

Ralph has an imaginary bunny that pops up once in awhile. Most often Ralph needs to go back inside a room/building/house to retrieve bunny after he has stepped outside (the room/building/house). Bunny has even driven daddy's car to 'school' before.

Ralph likes to stand on the runner on the car and pretend to be a garbage guy.

A month or so ago Ralph got a few timeouts before we even left 'school' for pushing Henry. I think we might be over that stage but now he has become a little more clingy/whiny when I leave in the morning. One of his friends at school moved up last week but her mom and I tend to arrive nearly the same time most days to pick up the kids and they get to leave together which is a highlight of the day - or a lowlight if the timing does not work out.

Last week, Ralph stood on a shoe shelf that it sitting in the middle of his room. He told me it was his stage and started to sing and perform the actions to "He's got the Whole World in his Hands". It is fun to watch him duplicate what he does at chapel - there is so much precision in the action and he is careful do to it the right way. I tried to perform the actions and he had to correct me as I was doing it wrong.

Ralph is quite the character when he wakes up. Usually Mike & I are downstairs getting ready for the day when we hear Ralph flip on his light switch . . then a few minutes later we might hear thumping as he scouts down the stairway. He definitely takes after me in the "has a hard time being quiet" category. We have caught him laying on the landing halfway down the stairway. Sometimes it is much easier for him to just whine for Mommy or Daddy when he wakes up and then we have to cater to him before he gets too loud in hopes of him not waking up Henry.

Ralph's bedtime routine continues to be never ending. Months ago he decided the head of the bed was what most of us would consider the foot of the bed. Then he decided he wanted the door open - not just a little but all the way - he HAS to hear the door 'hit' the door stop before he is content. By making these changes Ralph can see what is going on in the hallway, albeit a small hallway but he can spy us going from our room to the stairway to go downstairs, giving him a chance to call out for whoever he sees. Let me back up, after reading books - right when lights go out - one of us has to sit on his floor for a few minutes. Ralph requests whoever is in his room to sit on the floor for 3 minutes, usually (number could change). Unfortunately, when Ralph says 3 minutes he means when the minute gets to a 3 which does not work so well when lights are turned off at 8:05, for example. Ralph has also decided he does not want his nightlight plugged in anymore.

We did notice last week his 2nd molars are finally breaking through on the bottom, both sides.

His love for miniature golf continues. He still talks about going to the place we played golf and wanting to go back. Now that its getting warmer out we'll have to try the outdoor courses in Lincoln, 18 holes may be a little much though. He also likes baseball, tennis, and basketball.

Ralph's conversational skills and memory amaze us sometimes. Yesterday he brought up the Christmas program at daycare and how he saw me but Henry was not there which was correct and I don't think we've talked about it much since December.

Ralph & Mike have played Candyland once. Ralph picked out a man for each of them then we had him turn over the top card. He moved his man to the appropriate color but then, during his next turn, he wanted to exchange his man for the color on the card he flipped over. After a few rounds he started to get it but we have not tried to play again.

We have been working with Ralph on spelling his name. We've traced his name with him. We've spelled his name with dots and tried to get him to connect the dots. He has a few letters figured out but not all.
