The kid seems to read a book faster than he can check them out but I am fairly sure he skips around more than he should. He has moved from the early readers to various series including Magic Tree House books, Hey Jack, Junie B Jones (BUT just the first grader ones I have learned), Lunch Lady, Geronimo Stilton, and George Brown Class Clown.
School seems to be going well though getting information about what he is doing or how his day was is difficult at best. There was a bit of an "issue" in December, just before break, that caused us to introduce "talk time" at bedtime to find out more about his day. While I have a hard time letting him stay up even later to tell me about his day when it's already late enough for him to be awake it is the time he opens up the most and loves the one-on-one time. Sometimes we deviate a bit from the task at hand. I have been quizzed on math problems and other subjects. The last few weeks I have been replaced by his attempting to squeeze in a few more pages of reading.
In addition to the possible 14 spelling words he and some classmates have weekly; he and one other student have an extra 2 "super super hard" words. He has excelled on the weekly spelling tests - he has missed a few here and there - once for a sloppy "a" that looked like a "u" and created a different word. The word "beneficial" also stumped him - he had it spelled right while practicing at home the morning of the test but missed it on the test - so I throw it in once in a while when we are working on words to see if he can consistently spelling it correctly.
Penmanship and story writing are his most challenging subjects. He has been meeting the requirements for story writing but does not expand beyond what is necessary.
He took an interest in multiplying 2 digits (12 x 24) a few months back after seeing an older student in his before/after program working on his homework. We explored the concept for a bit but I think it's on the back burner for now.
Ralph choose not to do any indoor soccer this winter - or the upcoming outdoor session. He did a session of indoor flag football in December/January but chose not to do another one - or the upcoming outdoor session. There were less volunteers helping this time and the atmosphere was a little different. Basketball is going well.
Tiger Cub Scouts seems to be going well. He likes the activities but it is hard to get him motivated to initiate a project by himself. There are some individual achievements he can work on; we have read through some of the projects but he hasn't tried to follow through with any.
Not much has changed in his eating habits.
Ralph will usually read in his room during rest time/H's nap time at home on the weekends but once in awhile he'll still fall asleep.
He LOVES to play video and computer games. He has a strong yearning for someone to play with him; anyone.
He just moved into size 13 shoes; he is is wearing size 7 pants and M (6-7 shirts).
At home he needs to work on not arguing, accepting an answer as the final answer, and learning when to be quiet. I don't think he intentionally argues but it sure sounds like it most of the time. He loves to talk just to talk and hear himself talk - the sentence is hardly ever relevant to the real conversation at hand. Luckily these just seem issues at home.
Ralph had a few friends over for his birthday to play video games.
Tonight's bedtime story was a "replay" of the story of his birth. He loves to hear it and its a great way to end the day. Each year is so different and we are always learning along with Ralph. Seven years went by in a flash; seven more years and he'll be getting ready for high school???!!! Yikes!
