Henry: Itty Bitty Baseball

Wanting to give Henry a chance get out of his brother’s shadow we signed him up for Itty Bitty Baseball, a program for kids ages 3-5 and a parent.  The program works on fundamentals through rotating stations as well as incorporating games.  Henry is about 10 months younger than Ralph was when he took Itty Bitty Baseball; we were not sure if Henry would be too young but did not want to wait until next summer either.  After protesting a bit at the first session, he broke out of his comfort zone and did great.  These photos were taken at the 3rd session (there are 6 sessions).

He might be small but he is mighty; putting his whole body into throwing the ball!

Playing a game of cat chasing mouse (or something like that) - all smiles as he is chasing daddy.

 More effort into throwing!

 Practicing running the bases!

Batter up!

Father's Day Weekend Fun!

I am getting a bit behind but we had a great Father’s Day weekend.  We took off Saturday morning for Beaver Crossing and spent some time at a nearby pond.  The boys tried their hand at fishing followed by some play in the sand and water.  Ralph went back to fishing and caught a blue gill that was roughly 4 ½” long.  Henry had fun building sandcastles with Uncle Larry in the meantime.  The boys had a great time and can not wait to go back.

After naps we headed over the community park and practiced a little t-ball and played on the playground equipment.  Ralph told me he was "locked in jail."  Henry loved the tall curly slide and Merry Go Round.

We spent the night in Beaver and headed back on Sunday.  After a much needed nap, Ralph went to a Jr. Saltdogs clinic then we all went to the Saltdogs game.   It really was a great weekend!

Henry: Celebrating 3 1/2 years!

The band-aid on Henry's forehead is a little overly dramatic.  He ran into a table we have out back over the weekend and what started out as a red mark, scabbed over by Monday, and as with many scabs it was too tempting not to pick so the large band-aid is covering a not-so-big owie.  He has a few less than obvious owies - a bruise on his elbow he got on Monday and a cut on his lip that swelled quite a big when it happened on Tuesday but had receded by this morning though there is now a scab on his lip to tempt him.

I think I can truly say my baby is not a baby anymore.  He just keeps developing and growing and I can’t stop him!  There are signs every once in a while that he does not want to grow up, just yet. He still likes to be held/carried around especially in unfamiliar places (and sometimes it is hard to give up my baby).  Sometimes I will hold hands but not hold him when I know he is in a safe environment.  He loves his blankie at sleep times even though it is getting holy, and wants to sleep with his school blankies when we bring them home to wash on the weekends.  Every once in a while he asks to be fed.  He wants help dressing though he does not need it.

In observing Henry playing around Ralph and other friend’s of Ralph, there are signs he wants to play with the “big kids” and does his best to keep up with them but sometimes the “big kids” get away and Henry is left to play, learn, and discover on his own.  Usually if he has a trike, dirt, sand, or playset to play on he is fine.  A few months ago he got on trike while at a friend of Ralph’s and rode it like crazy.  It was great to watch.  He has had some practice at “school” pedaling on trikes/big wheels in the gym during the winter but this one of the first times he was successful outside.  He sure looked happy to be free to pedal as fast as he could!  Since the weather has finally warmed up he does like going for a trike ride when he can.

I’m not really sure if he has grown much but when we finally switched from pants and long shirts to shorts and short sleeve shirts he seems taller.    It is always fun to see legs and arms after being hidden for so many months.  On the occasion pants are still needed, the 3T jeans still have to be folded a bit sometimes.  His short sizes vary from 18 mo – 3T this season based on how tight or loose the elastic is, shirt size size is 3T, and shoe size is 7.5toddler.

His diet is still pretty selective but it doesn’t not help we are usually eating supper on the run lately and do not have much time to explore a lot of variety.  He is became accustomed to having breakfast at home THEN again at “school” so he should be getting plenty of calories since he is eating 4 meals a day.  He still likes the lids of his sippy cups to match the cups though in the last few days he has asked for the lid to be removed when there is not much left so he can drink everything.

A few weeks ago we cut back on the breathing treatments to once a day and stopped the Singulair under the doctor’s suggestion.  We will go back to what we had been doing last winter in August for the fall/winter months.  Last year we completely stopped the breathing treatments and he was hit hard in August and didn’t have anything in his system to help him so we are hoping this year is better.  It wasn’t the suggestion I wanted to hear but am anxious to see if it does the trick.

In checking with the 4-year checklist at the doctor’s office, it seems Henry can do everything on the list so developmentally he should be right line with his peers.  Like many 3-year-olds, Henry does need to work on listening.  I know it is very selective as some moments he can be the best kid; other times I have to repeat something multiple times.  Some moments he is the best behaved; most polite 3-year old and minutes, sometimes seconds later the tables turn.  He can quiver his lip and let out a tantrum in nothing flat if he does not get the answer or like the direction the conversation is going.  He has always been pretty good at saying thank you; saying please is a little hit and miss but it is getting better.

He has about 0 patience and is slightly stubborn.  He gives great bear hugs and kisses.    You will not see any other child as excited to see his mommy when I pick him up from daycare.  Now that the weather is nice his class is outside playing (inside a fenced area) when I pick them up.  Nearly every day I drive by the playground he notices me, shouts “MOMMY”, and runs to the fence and runs along the fence following the car until he can’t run any more.  Whether or not he misses that chance he will usually run up to me with arms waving high in the air once I reach the playground.  He can tend to be a parrot even when you do not think he is listening.  He likes to make up silly, no-nonsense words and phrases.  He likes to tell stories though he usually starts in the middle and gives a cliffhanger at the end, not really giving the story closure.  He has some pretty good facial expressions and hand gestures to go along with the stories sometimes.  His time sequence may be a little off as well as to when the story took place but never the less it is fun to watch him tell stories and get excited about little things.

About a month ago I discovered Henry could finally read the digital numbers on the clock in his room.  He understands he is supposed to nap until 2.  I doubt I could convince him to nap until 3 so it is best to try to get him to bed around 12:30 in hopes he falls asleep and goes past two.  Sometimes he ends up staying awake until 2 and tells me he slept until 2  . . . which only is believable until he falls asleep a couple of hours later at church.

Bedtime is easier than it has been and he usually does asleep all night.  He does stall going to bed by reading books while sitting on the potty and sometimes asks to be covered up multiple times – sometimes only once.
