Ralph: Celebrating 5 years!!

I asked Ralph on Tuesday, “Do you know what today is?” He says Tuesday, followed by garbage day, followed by basketball night, followed by a school day. I said that is all correct but do you know WHAT today is? Today is your last day of being 4! Crazy to think back, 5 years ago we were childless, had a lot more room in our townhome, and could walk around without running into Legos and other toys that hardly ever get put back to where they need to be.

What is Ralph like these days?

He likes anything and everything to do with angry birds and superheros. He likes someone to play with him. He likes to watch youtube during Henry’s breathing treatments – his most requested videos are Wild Kratts, Teen Titans, and Batman Brave and the Bold. He likes shutting his bedroom door while playing with his brother and they both barricade themselves in by putting blankets against the door. He likes being cozy while he sleeps and has many blankets in his bed, mostly piled up at the end only utilizing two or so at a time. He likes hoarding items. He has a “secret” stash of candy and treats in a cubby he has deemed his, as well as in a drawer next to his bed.  I have also discovered some items from daycare in his coat pocket I do not think are supposed to be in his pockets. He likes being read to. He likes the colors green, orange, red, and blue.  He likes sitting on my lap as I try to work on the computer. He likes checking himself in on the computer at daycare. He likes testing my patience though he does not always know he is testing it.

He does not like it when he is hurried along.  He does not like to be bothered while watching youtube.

He is more than ready for Kindergarten. He loves to learn. We’ve been working on simple addition and subtraction. He has been able to write his name for awhile. He asks how to write words letter by letter.  He knows he needs to raise his hand when he wants to get our attention and has something to say.  He had been experimenting with a few spanish words for awhile but that interest has waned some.  He is reading some words - it may be memorization but he is reciting the words in new context.

Amazingly, he is still 5-point harnessed in the car seat. He may meet the minimum requirements for using the regular seatbelt in the booster but his 5-yr checkup/kindergarten physical isn’t for another couple of weeks so we’ll wait to make any decisions.

Lights out at night are around 8:10, I’m guessing he falls asleep around 8:30 and gets up anywhere from 6:15 – 7 am, usually closer to 6:15-6:30 am. He prefers French toast sticks or mini pancakes in the morning.  He is really good about eating fruits, vegetables are still hit and miss but he does like broccoli and carrots more than the standard green beans and corn.  His favorite choices for lunch or supper are currently peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, hotdogs, grilled cheese sandwiches, and mac and cheese.

He is wearing size 9.5 toddler shoes; XS, 4, and some S sized shirts depending on the style, and 5T and 5 sized pants; adjustable waists are a must and the 5's are folded up at the hem.  He can zip his coat.  He'd rather not mess with buttoning/snapping his pants/jeans.  He is not picky on what I pick out for him to wear each day. He can tie his shoes when he wants to.

Ralph has been taking a basketball clinic since mid-January.  He has dribbling skills has grown exponentially.  He learned basic basketball fundamentals that will only grow as he develops better eye-hand coordination and learns to be a bit more aggressive.  It has been fun watching him grow in this area.

We finished eating on Wednesday at 5:57, just in time to wish Ralph an official Happy Birthday at 5:58 pm.  What a ride the past five years has been!

Superhero Training Academy (aka Ralph's 5th Birthday Party)

The morning of Saturday, March 16 welcomed 14 excited kids to the Superhero Training Academy.  It was two hours of energy, excitement, and a bit of chaos.

The party started with the chance to color a superhero mask then the kids were given time to complete three activities: knock out the super villians, see how far your superhero glider can fly, and pin the mask on Super Ralph.  I had visions of the kids completing the activities as a group; they enjoyed going at their own pace.

Once they completed the three activities the kids "earned" their superhero capes.
After some time of playing with their capes on they took a break for a cupcake and juice followed by opening gifts.

I got caught up in the kids excitement and didn't maintain the order I should have during gift opening.  It was a bit chaotic but I have finally matched all the gifts to the person who gave the gift.

All in all, it was a fun party and I'm glad Ralph had the chance to celebrate with his friends!

The Making of Ralph's 5th Birthday Party!

We decided to let Ralph has his 1st friend birthday party this year.   It seemed like a natural choice.  His birthday parties have been pretty small up to know with the four of us, Grandma & Grandpa, and Uncle Larry; his godfamily coming when they are able.  I felt the party needed to grow, he needed some people closer to his age, and turning five is a big milestone to celebrate!  It was only natural to invite his “friends” from daycare.  He is with them more than his own family.  We also invited a few others.
Knowing there are 16 kids in Ralph’s room at daycare alone I knew our place would be too small so I explored other options and found the best choice almost literally in our backyard.  The church attached to daycare has rooms available to use for a fee.  We found the perfect sized room that easily accommodated 15 kids running around.  It was great to find a place in a building the kids are comfortable with even though they may not have been in that room before.
As much as Ralph is into Superheros it was an easy choice to theme his birthday as such.  He likes all Superheros and can name a few I do not remember.  I’m not sure where he receives his superhero education, I’m guessing from some classmates along with the shows he watches on youtube.

The stage was set - we had a location (Capitol City Christian Church Activity Room), a date (Saturday, March 16), a theme (Superheros) . .  . now we just need an invite to spread the word.  I had fun designing the invitations - used a photo of "super" Ralph and deleted the background and added a building and a sky to create a superhero look.  I'm an amateur designer and it took longer than it should have to perfect it but I enjoyed making the invite.  I also had a tshirt made that said "Superhero in Training."
I wanted to supply all the kids with their very own superhero cape and was able to find simple instructions on pinterest.  We altered the instructions a bit in hopes they’ll last a little longer but fleece fabric is pretty easy to work with and does not need a finished edged.

We came up with a few "superhero" games during the planning process and ended up with a "Knock out the Super Villain!" bean bag toss that knocked down cups stacked in a pyramid with a super villain sitting at the top, "How far can your Superhero glide?" using these little cutout planes that looked like superheros, and "Pin the mask on Super Ralph" using a 20"x30" photo of Ralph.  (photo we used to play "pin the mask on Super Ralph."

There was also a backdrop with buildings and a cloudy sky with the intent of taking pictures of the kids using superhero "props" - a barbell and signs with superhero words.

Next up was deciding the fare for the party.  We took a few photos of Ralph "flying" in the sky and had hoped to use that on the cake.  He didn't go for the idea.  He wanted superheros.  Knowing he does not like a specific superhero but lots of superheros I knew I couldn't be able to accomplish his goal with a store bought cake.   I opted to get cupcakes and decorate them myself by putting various superhero emblems on toothpicks and putting the pics in the cupcakes.  We also had various snacks available including catclaws (bugles), visions sticks (carrots), spidey bits (Spiderman graham crackers), and green lantern's rings (round pretzels dipped in white almond bark dyed green).

The goodybags were developed during the past few months and included a few superhero trinkets along with a certificate for completing Superhero Training Academy.

After all that planning, party day finally arrived last Saturday!
